Digitising Malaysia’s traditional house heritage through an accessible and immersive virtual experience

Malaysia's traditional Malay houses — the rumah Melayu tradisional — represent one of the country's most significant architectural and cultural heritage forms. Each regional variation reflects centuries of local craftsmanship, climate adaptation, and cultural identity. Preserving and sharing this heritage is not merely a cultural priority — it is a national one, and Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia as the country's national library has a mandate to make this knowledge accessible to all Malaysians.

The challenge is a familiar one for heritage institutions: physical constraints limit who can engage with the collection. A gallery in Kuala Lumpur can only reach the visitors who can travel to it. Students in Sabah, researchers in Penang, and Malaysians in the diaspora who want to understand their architectural heritage have no practical way to access a physical exhibition. Even visitors who do attend are constrained by what they can observe — a model or photograph of a traditional house tells only part of the story; the spatial experience of being inside it tells the rest.

PNM needed a digital solution that could transcend these physical limitations — delivering the traditional house experience to any device, anywhere, while giving on-site visitors a deeper, immersive engagement with what they were seeing.
